The Campaign, with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has funded and worked with three states in their work on student First Amendement protection and student journalism.

The States of Colorado, Michigan, and Pennsylvania have partnered with the Campaign to improve state policies and educational practices in their state. Activities included in the "Knight" states work range from sponsoring professional development for school administrators, advocating with state legislators on strengthening laws that protect student First Amendment protection, convening state level workshops that bring together key stakeholders, and developing model policies for school districts.
