I Signed the Constitution is a national outreach program of the National Constitution Center.
Schools, libraries, National Park museums, boy and girl scout groups, senior organizations, law firms and even doctors’ offices have been staging “I Signed the Constitution” programs since 1991. Individuals have the opportunity to join with our Founding Fathers in signing a reproduction of the document as it exists today with amendments, which we supply, along with other educational materials. “I Signed” recreates the energy and inspiration of the signing of the Constitution by providing the tools to develop a station where people can learn about the Constitution and sign the document. The downloadable package includes ways to produce a pocket constitution, a model set-up for an “I Signed” station, suggested formats for public programs, a downloadable Constitution scroll which could be enlarged at a copy house, and a bibliography of books and web sites. There is also advice on how to engage public officials and celebrities and how to publicize an event, with a model press release. An “I Signed” package will soon be available for purchase as well, which will include all of the above material in book format as well as pocket constitutions, quill pens, flags, a green table cloth (replicating what was used in Philadelphia’s Independence Hall), a large scroll of the Constitution to be signed, a poster of the Center’s Signers’ Hall, and other educational materials.
This program is the ultimate "interactivity." By signing the constitution, participants become virtual founders. I Signed the Constitution can be adapted by individual sites to fit individual learners' needs.
A very practical simulation for students to reenact the signing of the Constitution, an event seminal in our nation's history and critical to the birth of our constitutional democracy.
