The Red Cedar Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution participated in the “I Signed the Constitution Program” by working with the Austin Public Library in Minnesota. The largest event they held took place on September 21-22, 2004. One hundred and seventy-five people of all ages attended. This organization set up a display at the local library for people to visit and sign the Constitution, receive handouts, certificates and small flags. Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed musical performances and a display of library books about the Constitution and other relevant subject materials. There was a separate display with quill pens that explained how ink was made and told of the purple and brown qualities of ink. Bonnie Rietz, the city mayor attended, along with members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, League of Women Voters, Retired Teachers Association, Degree of Honor Protective Association, VFW and the County Historical Society. This event was covered by the Austin Daily Herald, the Austin Post-Bulletin, KAUS radio station, KAAL television, KIMT television, and press from Mason City, Iowa. The program also occurred on various dates at county elementary and middle schools. The materials provided included worksheets, displays, and the Daughters of the American Revolution were available for follow-up discussions at the schools. The feedback from this event included, “people were so pleased with this celebration and very eager to sign,” “we had fun doing it,” and “our community groups were happy to get involved and share.”
