STORY -- History Day in California

STORY -- History Day in California

The History Day in California 2005 State Finals took place May 7th and 8th in San Diego. Over 900 students from across the state participated in two days of competition. These students had been working on their projects since September, researching, creating, and bringing their work to life.

They conducted interviews with community members as well as renowned historical figures. At the State Finals, each student (or group of students) presented entries to three professional historians and were then were given feedback and comments. Each student had to perfect analytical, presentation, and performance skills for History Day in California.

One of the most powerful stories about the influence of History Day on students is that of a young lady who is battling bone cancer. This young lady was a performance student who was diagnosed after her freshman year of high school. As a sophomore, she took one class while undergoing treatment, a History Day class. She created an exhibit that year to compensate for her health and won 2nd place at the National competition.

This year she returned to the performance category as her health improved. She says that History Day is what got her through her ordeal.
