In its fifth year, the Real World Civics Summer Internship program
is an excellent means for participants to learn first-hand about state
government and the public policies important to California.
The program can be particularly useful to those entering the twelfth
grade because of the advanced knowledge they gain about government
prior to their senior-year government class.
Feedback from former participants is below:
I
have gained a complete understanding of both state and local government
through the program that no text book could ever offer.
I've
gained so much from the internship! I never knew how our government
really ran, and how each person functions like part of a large machine.
I also never knew how much was open to the public and I am saddened by
how little interest the public actually shows in the running of our
state's affairs.
The internship
has provided me with a life changing opportunity that has not only been
fun, but also educated me tremendously. This program has provided me
with a thorough understanding of what goes on in the Capitol as well as
political theories and bills. It has also inspired me to pursue
politics and has given me a lot of faith in the democratic process.
