Model Content Standards for Civics (total of 4) contain general standards by grade spans K-4, 5-8, 9-12. Suggested grade-level expectations for civics include K-8 expectations by grade. Standard 1 addresses understanding of the purposes of government and basic constitutional principles of U.S. government. Standard 2 addresses the structure and functions of government and the role of citizens in shaping public policy. Standard 3 addresses the political relationship of the U.S. and its citizens to other nations and world affairs. Standard 4 addresses citizen rights and responsibilities.
