From the introduction to the social studies standards: "It is the responsibility of the social studies to prepare young people to identify, understand, and work to resolve problems that confront them, their communities, the nation, and the international community." The political science standard reads: "Students will understand the historical development and current status of the fundamental concepts and processes of authority, power, and influence, with particular emphasis on democratic skills and attitudes necessary to become responsible citizens." The rationale for this standard states, "Students should be provided with opportunities to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to become active citizens." Social studies standard 6.8.8.1: "describe the importance of civic and personal responsibilities to the individual and society, including legal obligations, volunteering, and performing public service."
