Revised in 2006, the five standards for Social Studies include a dedicated K-12 standard for Civics and Government and another for Global Perspectives with articulated learning objectives for all grades / social studies courses.

The Social Studies Scope and Sequence suggests a 12th-grade American government course. A "course of study" guide, Voices of Citizenship, includes 3 "blocks": Block 1: "emergence of a democracy," "government," and "civic activism;" Block 2: Project Citizen; and Block 3: service-learning. Each theme includes a goal and objectives, a character education theme, a list of the appropriate standards, suggested activities and materials.

Additionally, as a capstone course to the standard for Civics and Government, a full-year of American Government is required for high school graduation. A suggested course model, Voices of Citizenship, is available from the state.
