Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools Education for Democracy
A Long-Term Effort to Renew and Elevate Civic Learning in Our Nation's Schools

The rationale for study of civics and government refers to "informed, responsible participation in public life," "competent participation in the political process" and "the capacity to influence policies and decisions by working with others, clearly articulating interests and making them known to key decision and policy makers, building coalitions, negotiating, compromising, seeking consensus and managing conflicts." The civics/government standards focus on obeying rules and laws; American symbols; essential documents; structures; functions and powers of government; voting; principles of democracy; rights and duties; political theory; etc.

The state standards require high school students to learn the political, economic and social characteristics of Greek and Roman civilizations and their impact on later civilizations. Students will also study the Revolutionary War, the role of the Founding Fathers and the founding documents (passed 6/30/03).
