Contained within Social Studies Curriculum Framework. Social Studies Curriculum Frameworks include "Power, Authority and Governance" among five strands. Includes "Civics and Government" among major concepts and skills developed in the social studies, defined as "informed, responsible participation in political life by competent citizens committed to the fundamental values and principles of American constitutional democracy." Also includes the statement, "The formal curriculum should be augmented by related learning experiences, in both school and community, that enable students to learn how to participate in their own governance." Benchmarks for grades 5-8 include participation in a service-learning project. |
